LINER NOTES
NON-ATMOSPHERIC TRACKS ONLY
1. THE 21ST CENTURY BEGINS
Less than three months from its historic and much publicized opening, EPCOT Center made its debut on motion picture screens as a featurette accompanying the release of the equally groundbreaking film TRON. Depicting the development and construction of the park, the film features an appropriately avant-garde electronic score composed by the world-famous synthwave artist Michael Iceberg.
3. THE FUTURE CORPS
Future World’s premiere group of live brass players and percussionists, the Future Corps entertained park visitors with its innovative, high-energy band arrangements from December 1982 to May 2000.
THE EPCOT EXPANDED UNIVERSE
Ranging from the tangential, like Duran Duran’s “Rio” on The Living Seas opening to custom-created compositions as in Danny Kaye’s many musical numbers for the park’s Grand Opening Special, many works have become inextricably associated with the park. And although not presented inside its gates, they are nevertheless a intrinsic part of its history.
Incidentally, CommuniCore is by far the least musically-rich environment in Future World. Considering its geographical and thematic placement as the pavilion that encompasses all others, now is the best time to showcase several works created not necessarily for but absolutely about EPCOT Center.
5. THE SOUVENIR SUITE
Comprised of the Future World-centered underscore for the well-known “EPCOT Center – A Souvenir Program” VHS, this medley of production music is meant to represent the multiple levels of merchandising fun that was Centorium.
9. ELECTRONIC FORUM THEME
The home of Future Choice Theater and the EPCOT Opinion Poll where one could participate in the largest, earliest and most entertaining data collecting survey of the 1980s covering a wide array of future-focused topics.
13. STARGATE ‘93
Although few and far between, there are a few ancillary benefits to the opening of new parks. The most notable of these is the presentation of musical atmospheres repurposed into existing spaces. In nearly all cases, this occurs in “castle parks” exclusively where all Main Streets and Fantasylands enjoy fresh soundscapes created for the new park. Shortly after (then) Euro Disney’s 1992 opening, much of its music could be heard in magic kingdoms around the world. One of these, originally composed for Discoveryland, eventually took-up a very short residence inside CommuniCore during the Pavilion’s last year of operation before its conversion to Innoventions.
15. FWSS – MAIN THEME
Starting from the digital frontier of TRON then expanding into the entire Universe of Energy, the Future World Soundtrack Series theme encompasses some of the most iconic and impactful themes in the history of the park.
